Job Summary:

PHYSICIAN – FULL TIME

SURGERY SERVICE

The duty station for this position is the John Cochran Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center. This position is not in the bargaining unit.

This position is eligible for Education Debt Reduction Plan (EDRP)

Major Duties:

The prospective candidate should work well with multidisciplinary teams; possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The successful applicant will assist the Chief of Surgery in providing process improvement, administrative, clinical and research oversight to a dual-division, multi-specialty surgical program including General/Vascular, ENT, Orthopedic, Urological, Ophthalmic, Podiatry, Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery and prospective programs in Cardiac and Robotic Surgery. The prospective candidate will be board certified or eligible in General Surgery and have at least five years of experience beyond residency or fellowship training. In addition to fulfilling their administrative responsibilities, the prospective candidate will be expected to practice within the specialty of General Surgery in the operating room, outpatient clinics and the surgical wards. The applicant must be eligible for an academic appointment with the Department of Surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine or the Washington University School of Medicine.

Qualifications:

1. Citizen of the United States or authorization to work in the United States.

2. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

3. Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

4. First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate’s acceptability for residency training

5. Must pass a pre-employment physical, which may include drug testing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Applicant must have experience with Attending and Resident education and supervision.

2. Applicant should be able to demonstrate experience with Quality Improvement activities within Surgery.

3. Individuals selected for positions that have patient care responsibilities are subject to undergoing an electronic credentialing process called VetPro. As part of this process, it will be necessary for you to submit complete information concerning your professional education, training, experience, licensure and certifications using VetPro. The candidate selected will be provided with further information on how to use VetPro.

4. The applicant should possess evidence of experience in the area of clinical research as evidenced by published articles and abstracts and/or presentations at national conferences.

5. The applicant should have evidence of managerial experience.

6. The applicant must successfully complete a background security investigation prior to appointment.
